Dream Team Makes Big Come Back: Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro

Let’s talk about why movie buffs are going wild with excitement over the latest announcement of an upcoming crime film, “The Irishman.”

The mob drama feature is a collaboration by the revered director, Martin Scorsese and famed actor, Robert De Niro. It will also be featuring some of Hollywood’s favorite stars, including Joe Pesci and Al Pacino.

This $125 million project will be the ninth film Scorsese and De Niro have made in partnership, but will mark the first time in nearly two-and-a-half decades the duo has worked together. So it’s safe to say, that those movie buffs have good reason to be going wild with excitement over this epic and long-awaited reunion!

The duo is known for creating some of the greatest movies ever made together, including the “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” and “Goodfellas.” Most of their collaborations have been crime dramas, a genre that they hold close to their hearts (and are both very obviously pros at mastering!)

De Niro and Scorsese were introduced many years ago through a mutual friend, Brian De Palma, who had directed 20-year-old De Niro in the movie, “The Wedding Party.” Although this movie remained unreleased for over 9 years, De Palma instead launched De Niro in the 1968 film “Greetings,” which acted as De Niro’s film debut.

In spite of De Niro and Scorsese’s many collaborations which are deemed by cinema lovers as some of the greatest movies ever made, Scorsese was unable to bag an Oscar award for best director for any of them. However, De Niro scored Oscar awards for his performance in “The GodfatherII” and “Raging Bull.”

This duo survived a stretch of sabbatical to their movie-making partnership during the ’90s, after their release of “Cape Fear.” At the time, De Niro wanted to give a new career path a shot and pursued his passion for comedy, while Scorsese formed another successful collaborative partnership with actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

Rumors erupted that something must have gone horribly wrong between De Niro and Scorsese for their collaborative days to seemingly end, but that was never the case. At the time, not much was known about why they were no longer creating films together since both the actor and director kept personal information out of their interactions with the media, and seldom granted interviews.

However, throughout it all, Scorsese has given De Niro the lifetime achievement award on multiple occasions, and speaks highly of the actor, stating that he is able to portray and emphasize every character perfectly, making him an ideal performer to work with. The actor, in turn, is also only known to speak very highly about the director, claiming that Scorsese has been able to coax the best performances from him, and claims that Scorsese understands him better than anyone else he has worked with. De Niro says he feels inspired to give everything he can as a performer whilst working with Scorsese since the amount of love that the director portrays for his craft is palpable.

De Niro and Scorsese both attribute their personal successes to the great amount of respect they have for each other and express their appreciation towards the level of cooperation they have in their work partnership.

Additionally, this will be the fourth time that De Niro will be appearing on screen opposite film legend Al Pacino. Previously, the duo has collaborated together on “Heat,” “The GodFatherII,” and “Righteous Kill.” The 2019 production of “The Irishman” will be the first time that Scorsese will be directing Pacino.

As the month’s inch closer, be sure to check Netflix updates to catch “The Irishman” when it comes in hot! This dream team hasn’t been spotted together in ages and this is bound to be the collaborative mob film of the decade.
