How Johnny Depp Blew $650 Million

How do millions of dollars simply vanish into thin air?

If you heard about a person who lost $650 million, perhaps your mind would assume it was due to a crash in the stock market, or that a serious gambling addiction took hold. It would take anyone a minute to digest this news, since losing such a high figure sounds quite hard to do.

Johnny Depp, one of the world’s best and highest paid actors, has made over $650 million in his films, and nearly all of it is gone.

The star is one of the most bankable actors in Hollywood, with his films grossing a total of $8 billion worldwide and $3.2 billion in the US alone. The vast majority of his $650 million earnings are from his involvement in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise.

Troubles arise in Depp’s Personal and Professional Lives

This is not the first time Depp has been enveloped in a major scandal that hit the headlines. In 2016, his high-profile divorce, initiated by his ex-wife Amber Heard, made the news. Heard alleged domestic abuse and posted pictures her bruises on social media. The case was settled out-of-court upon the signing of a non-disclosure agreement, whence parties walked away acrimoniously. Depp vehemently denied any such abuse, but his financial and legal troubles only seemed to worsen from there.

Depp is currently embroiled in an ugly legal battle with his former managers Joel and Robert Mandel of TMG Management after losing the majority of his $650 million fortune. In a lawsuit filed in January 2017, Depp claims his money is gone due to the ‘negligence and fraud’ by his former managers. However, the managers blame it on Depp’s $2 million per month spending habit.

Depp’s spending habits appear to be out of control

TMG filed a countersuit on Depp, claiming that the star spends close to $30,000 a month on wine alone and has even hired a sound engineer to feed him his lines on sets just so he doesn’t have to learn them. Other excessive expenditures include spending $5 million to shoot the ashes of a friend from a cannon and buying a $7,000 couch for his daughter from the set of ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians.’ Depp apparently spends close to $200,000 per month on private airfare to travel to his five properties which are scattered around the world.

If reports are to be believed, this Depp’s spending pattern has appeared as follows:

  • $30,000 a month on wines, adding: “Wine is not an investment if you drink it as soon as you buy it.”
  • $200,000 a month on private airplanes
  • $150,000 a month on around-the-clock security
  • $300,000 a month to maintain a staff of 40 people
  • $1.2 million to keep a doctor on call
  • $75 million for 14 residences
  • $18 million on a yacht
  • $4 million on a failed record label
  • $3 million to shoot Hunter S. Thompson’s ashes out of a cannon.
  • $7,000 to buy his daughter a couch from Keeping Up With the Kardashians

Depp admitted that because his marital and financial problems hit around the same time, he was close to being suicidal.

Depp tried to clarify the charges against him but failed. He said that the engineer plays sounds so that he knows what to emote on-screen and on spending $30,000 on wine, he said: “It’s insulting to say I spent $30,000 on wine. Because it was far more.” Touché, Johnny.
