At its core, biotechnology is technology derived from biology. It essentially uses organisms to create products and innovations which advance and improve the lives of our human species on a global scale.
In recent years, the biotech sector has seen some ground-breaking discoveries. Here’s a list of the top five most innovative biotech companies in the world.
Novartis is a healthcare company based in Switzerland. The company was formed as the result of two prior companies merging together in 1996. This one made the list because it successfully re-engineered T-cells, an effective treatment which is now used to battle malicious cancer cells.
This first chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy was named Kymriah, and received the FDA’s approval in August 2017. This therapy is used to treat cancer patients under the age of 25.
Mayo Clinic co-founded this company in 2013. It specializes in pharmacogenomic testing and tools in relation to everyday patient care. For reference, pharmacogenomics is the study of how a persons response to drugs is determined by their genes.
This company made the list for creating a test that predicts possible risks for patients’ interactions with drugs, using their genes as the determining factor. The test, RightMed comprehensive test, received approval from New York Department of Health on December 5, 2018.
As women’s issues have been brought to the forefront of the political world, GE Healthcare developed a new mammography system in 2017. The system is designed to detect breast cancer, even during its earliest stages. Breast cancer is known to pose a threat to women over the age of 40, but this new detection technology decreases the death rate by 25-50%.
Diseases need to be diagnosed and studied regularly be better understood by science. Similar diagnoses must be compared and studied before treating the disease, especially for various types of cancer. This poses an issue for small clinics and institutions who do not have similar cases to study while conducting research on rare cancer types.
To solve this issue, the San Francisco based company, Syapse, launched in 2017. Their aim is to create a data-sharing platform where doctors can collectively post their data and findings to advance the research of diseases and to improve the care given to cancer patients.
This Switzerland-based company uses Artificial Intelligence technology, Sophia AI, which focuses on research in genomics. This company is included in the list for introducing liquid biopsies in Sophia AI in 2017. The new app is equipped to discover tumor cells and circulating tumor DNA in cerebrospinal fluid, urine, and blood.
