Idris Elba to replace Will Smith in Suicide Squad 2

It looks like it is time for Luther star Idris Elba to take over Hollywood after conquering British cinema.

After Hollywood superstar Will Smith had to exit Suicide Squad 2, Warner Bros. has chosen to replace him with Elba. Smith had to exit the project after scheduling conflicts. In the first movie that opened in 2016, Smith played the assassin anti-hero Deadshot.

Though the cast for the new movie has not been announced yet, rumors are that Margot Robbie is set to return as Harley Quinn. The first had Jared Leto as the Joker, Cara Delevingne as Dr. June Moone and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

Smith will next be seen in Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin where he plays the role of ‘Genie’. Robin Williams previously voiced Genie in the animated version of the film in 1992.

Elba is fresh off the success of the fifth season of award-winning series Luther. In the series, Elba plays the titular character of DCI John Luther. A tormented and brilliant detective whose demons almost always interfere with his new cases.

Before Suicide Squad, he is set to feature in the Netflix series ‘Turn Up Charlie’. He is also the frontrunner to replace Daniel Craig as the new James Bond, according to pundits.

Director of Guardians of The Galaxy I & II James Gunn has been brought in to helm the project. Gunn was fired from Marvel after his old homophobic tweets came in light sometime last year.

Even though Gunn found support in other Marvel actors who did not want him to be fired, he was let go by Disney. Gunn was then immediately hired by Warner Bros. to helm the new Suicide Squad movie.

The first Suicide Squad movie was a massive box office success, garnering close to $745 million. However, the movie was immensely critically panned.
